Μission statement

The Department of Philosophy was established in 1837 and recently became autonomous (Law 4589/2019). The main goal of the Department is to advance philosophical thought and knowledge through lectures, inquiry, innovative research, scientific publications and conferences, and to disseminate this body of knowledge to the academic community and the world at large.

The members of the teaching staff cover a wide span of academic disciplines through a carefully structured and meticulously planned curriculum. The aim of the Department of Philosophy is to offer to all undergraduate and graduate students a sound and effective education that will serve as a strong basis for any future academic or professional endeavors they may consider pursuing.

Since the foundation of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1837, the academic discipline of Philosophy has been a cornerstone in the formation and evolution of the greek educational system. Members of the Department's teaching staff and alumni have been recognized over the years for their significant  contribution to the field throughout the country and in academic institutions around the world. Their academic impact, in terms of teaching and research alike, has been notable nationwide, and on an international level as well.
