Presentation of the Department of Philosophy
The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was founded in 1837 under the initial name Othonian University (referring to Othon, the first king of the liberated Greece). It was the first University not only in Greece but also in the whole of the Balkan Peninsula and the area of the Eastern Mediterranean. It was in 1932 that it received its present name.
The Philosophical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was one of the 4 initial schools of the University.
The study and research of philosophy have been a primary concern of the founding decree of the School of Philosophy, amongst the other Human Sciences like Philology, History, Archaeology etc., while its temporary regulation (1837) provided for the appointment of a regular professor of Philosophy.
In 1984, the “Philosophical Department " in the form of a "Section of Philosophy " joined the establishment of the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology.
The new Department of Philosophy was founded as the successor of the Section of Philosophy in 2019 and had its first students in the Academic year 2019-2020.
The aim of the Department of Philosophy is the cultivation and promotion of the philosophical sciences and, through teaching and research, the training of competent scientists in the corresponding fields.
The Department offers undergraduate and graduate studies and three Master of Arts’ programmes (in “Philosophy” with three sections: History of Philosophy and Ideas – Political Philosophy – Applied Ethics, in “Business and Philosophy”, in association with another Department of the University and in “Animal Ethics”, in association with another educational organization). The Department possesses also five specialized Laboratories of Research.
